RUTH

No you’re not.  What’s on your mind?

 

MASON

Nothing.  I’m just thinking about this evening.

 

RUTH

Talk it out?

 

MASON

It’s going to be dangerous this evening.  They’re not just burning a cross on our church lawn.  They are planning to actually burn it down.

 

RUTH

And have you all planned for this?

 

MASON

Yeah, we have.

 

RUTH

Then it’s in God’s hands now Reverend.  You, more than anybody else should know that.  Besides, your son is excited enough for the both of you about tonight.

 

MASON

And that’s another thing.

 

RUTH

If you tell him he can’t go now, you’ll break his heart.

 

MASON

But he’ll still be alive.

 

RUTH
